Our Mission
Summits in Solidarity is a non-profit organization founded in 2020 by hikers from Wobanadenok (The White Mountains of NH). Our mission is to foster justice and equity for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) by amplifying BIPOC voices in outdoor spaces, supporting anti-oppression and anti-racist efforts, and mobilizing hikers and outdoor recreation community members to dismantle white supremacy.
Our Actions
SiS has three key components: 1) the annual #SummitsInSolidarity campaign, where participants hike to raise money for BIPOC-led justice work 2) the virtual Me and White Supremacy anti-racism challenge, where participants who hold white privilege work collectively to identify and dismantle their internalized white supremacy, and 3) ongoing sharing of resources related to the BIPOC experience in the outdoors.
See our 2023-4 annual report to learn more about our impact.
More About the June Hiking Campaign
The #SummitsInSolidarity Campaign is an annual hiking & outdoors initiative to raise $40,000+ every June for anti-racism and anti-oppression work that removes barriers to the outdoors. From summits and street corners across the country, hikers and outdoor recreation community members express solidarity with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and encourage donations to our #SummitsInSolidarity campaign. Hikers in Wobanadenok (the White Mountains of New Hampshire) launched the fundraiser in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020 and have raised over $72,000 for BIPOC-led racial justice work to date. The campaign culminates in a hike day every year on the last Saturday in June, and, for Northeast locals, a Solidarity Night after-party at the Notch Hostel.
A Note on Intersectionality
Racial justice cohabits with intersectionality. We cannot ignore that white supremacy marginalizes on the basis of class, age, gender, education, culture, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, and language. As such we strive to support people and organizations that live in these intersectionalities.
We are on Indigenous Land
Summits in Solidarity is based out of the mountains of the Wobanadenok which is the traditional ancestral homeland of the Abenaki and Wabanaki Peoples past and present. We acknowledge and honor with gratitude the land and waterways and the alnobak (people) who have stewarded the Wobanadenok throughout the generations.
